Jesse William Haws was born in Beaver Utah on November 28, 1913. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1935 and within two weeks, he joined the U.S. Air Corps. He was trained in Texas to be a pilot and was hired by United Airlines in 1938.
After two years of flying for the airline, he became a Major and served in World War II for four and a half years. He was stationed at Green Bay, Labrador, and his responsibility was getting and sometimes escorting the new pilots to England. The last year of duty before the end of the war was flying “The hump” from India to China.
At the end of the war, he returned as a pilot for United Airlines. Just before he retired in 1973, he was flying a 747 plane from San Francisco to Hawaii. After his retirement, he made his home in Carson City, Nevada, where he died in 1993.
