    I soloed on Christmas Eve when I was 16 years old on a small airport with grass runways in North Central Kansas. The year was 1956. I worked at this airport as a line boy washing airplanes, mowing grass, mechanics helper and many other odd jobs. This started in the Seventh grade and continued for seven + years. I spent three years two months in the Army as an n enlisted man. Going through Depot Level Maintenance School on the H-19, H-34, and the first class on the Huey helicopters at Ft. Eustis, VA. I became the Group Commanders Crew Chief for 2 1/2 years in Germany. After the Army I went to Spartan School of Aeronautics for my Airframe and Power Plant mechanics license. I worked at Lawrence, KS, as a mechanic and charter pilot. From there I went to United Airlines where I started as DC-6/7 engineer. I flew for a short time as a727 Flight Engineer. I flew as a First Officer on Viscounts, DC-6/7, 727, 737 and DC-8s. I flew as Captain on 757, 767, and 747s. I retired from United Airlines as a Captain on the 747-400.
