Captain Cherry began his aviation career as a mechanic for United Airlines in 1948 at Portland Oregon and finished 42 years later as a DC-8 Captain. As a mechanic he worked on the DC-3, DC-4, and the DC-6.
He began to fly as a Flight Engineer on the DC-6, DC-7, DC-8, the French-made Caravelle, and the British-made Viscount. He also flew the Boeing 727, 737, and 747.
In all this time head no accidents, did not damage any aircraft or injure any passenger or damage any cargo.
