United Airlines Captain Gareffa, also a retired U.S. Navy Captain, served on active duty, deploying to the S.E. Asian Theater from 1963-1969. After joining United in 1969, he remained with the Naval Reserve and served as Commanding Officer of VP-64, at Willow Grove, PA, before his retirement in 1985.

After a lengthy furlough from 1971-1978, Captain Gareffa rejoined United Airlines and became involved with the Airline Pilots Association. He was integrally involved with that organization, while at UAL, at local, MEC and national lavels; and he served as Secretary-Treasurer and Vice-Chairman of the UAL MEC.
