As a teen he met Charles Lindbergh in Grand Rapids, MI. Many years interest in model airplanes. Active and lettered in three sports.
Began to fly in 1935. Army Air Forces Reserve late 1942. To active duty in Europe flying C-47s with 442nd Troop Carrier Group.
Flew gliders behind German lines over the Rhine on "Varsity Operation." Received Purple Heart, Air Medal with two battle stars and arrowhead; plus other service medals and badges.
Retired after release from military hospital and extended active duty.
