    Captain Johnston discovered his love of aviation at an early age. He became a licensed pilot in his late teens. Continuing that interest in College, he joined the Purdue Flying Club. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army, becoming proficient in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Captain Johnston began his professional flying career in 1960 with United Airlines. He piloted most of the aircraft in the United fleet ending his Thirty-three year career as a 747-400 captain.
    He was an instructor with an Air Explorer Scout troop and found immense satisfaction in teaching young people to fly and go forth to a career in aviation.
    Retirement took him took him to a fly-in community in Florida. Captain Johnston hosted the N.E. Florida RUPA luncheons for a number of years. Now he is spending his time flying his Beech Bonanza and cataloguing his extensive collection of aviation books.
