    Merle worked for TransWorld Airlines for from 1940 to 1982. He started as a watch maker in the instrument shop and retired as Manager of the Instrument and Electronics shops. From 1942 through 1945, Merle was a captain with the Air Transport Command in Washington, D. C. where he worked on planes that took troops and heads of state back and forth to Europe.

    Merle was active in the restoration of two antique aircraft. The first was the Wright brothers Bi-plane which hangs in the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA. Along with a group of TWA volunteers, Merle assisted in the restoration of the Northrop Alpha, which hangs in the window of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D. C.
