    The son of a career naval aviator, Captain Michael J. Shewchuk received his commission as a naval officer through the NROTC program, graduating from the University of Virginia in 1978. Following flight training, he reported to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light THIRTY TWO (HSL-32) at Naval Air Station (NAS) Norfolk, VA for his initial operational tour flying the SH-2F Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System helicopter. He deployed aboard frigates for two Mediterranean cruises and then completed a tour as an instructor pilot at the SH-2F Fleet Replacement Squadron prior to being accepted in 1986 for the Training and Administration of Reserves program. CAPT Shewchuk's next duty station was NAS South Weymouth, MA, where he qualified as an aircraft commander in the UC-12B Super King Air turboprop aircraft prior to reporting to HSL-74. Enroute to assignment as the Officer in Charge of HSL-94 at NAS Willow Grove, PA, he attended the Naval War College. After two years as a squadron officer in charge, CAPT Shewchuk reported to the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, DC in 1993. He then completed a tour on the Joint Staff followed by a final tour in the Navy Secretariat, retiring from active duty in June, 2002. In addition to other awards, Captain Shewchuk is entitled to wear the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and Navy Achievement Medal.
