CAPT Mont J. Smith has a long history of interest and involvement in aviation. Family legend has it that he received his pilot's license before receiving his driver's license at the age of 16. Mont's father was an Army Air Corps pilot who flew missions during WWII and introduced him to the joys of flying. Mont entered the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT and graduated in June 1968. Mont then entered the USCG flight school in Pensacola, Florida, where he learned to fly the big birds of the Coast Guard fleet. Mont served in countless missions as a Search and Rescue pilot for the USCG while being stationed all over the United States. He piloted the C-130 and other helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. Mont retired from the USCG in 1994 and continued his aviation career. Mont continued to fly for a few years with a helicopter ambulance service, Mercy Air, in Hawaii. Mont then pursued working in the airline safety field and is currently the Director of Safety for the Air Transport Association.
Mont is a proud member of the Ancient Order of the Pterodactyl. Additionally, Mont has served in Rotary International. Mont is also a member of many Aviation related organizations.
Mont is happily married to his wife of 38 years, Linda. Mont has two children, Becky and Jeff; a son-in-law MAJ Charles Krumwiede; and a daughter-in-law Kristiane. Mont has four grandchildren; Matthew, Olivia, Katelyn and Ashton.
Mont's children and grandchildren are proud to see his name listed on the National Aviation and Space Exploration Wall of Honor. We are presenting him this honor in recognition of his 60th birthday on November 20, 2006.
