    Interested in aviation throughout childhood in Akron, Ohio. Learned to fly at University of West Virginia in 1945 at age 18. Hired as a pilot by United Airlines in 1951 starting as a DC-3 Copilot. Flew for United for 36 years, retiring as a Boeing 747 Captain in 1987 at age 60.
    Began flying sailplanes in 1960 and earned Diamond Badge #35 for flight above 30 thousand feet altitude and cross country distanced over 300 miles. Built an all-metal high performance sailplane and placed third in the National Soaring Championships in 1968. Owned a float plane for 40 years and did a lot of float flying in the Canadian bush country.
