Capt. Whitby flew seven different airplanes from props to jets for United Airlines for over 32 years and 20,000 hours.
He was a Commandant of Cadets of the Civil Air Patrol.
He received his flight training in the U.S. Air Force and flew paratroopers and their equipment in Europe for NATO dropping paratroopers form France, Scotland, U.S. Rangers and the French Foreign Legion. He also flew some of the first experimental heavy parachute drops in England, which included artillery and a fire engine.
