My flying career, which started at the University of Michigan in 1963, spanned 38 years. I learned to fly in a PA-18 Super Cub at Michigan. Following that I flew the United States Air Force T-37 and T-38 at Reese AFB, Lubbock, Texas. From 1966 to 1970 I flew the HC-130H Hercules and the C-7A Caribou. My C-7A Caribou experience took place in combat in Viet Nam from October 1966 to October 1967. While there, I earned 5 Air Medals and The Distinguished Flying Cross.
After joining United Air Lines in February of 1970, I flew many of their aircraft. I flew on the Boeing 727-100/200 and 737-200 as a flight engineer. I flew as copilot on the 737-200 and the DC-10-10/30. As Captain, I flew the Boeing 737-300/500 and the Airbus 320/321. I was fortunate to finish my flying career as captain on the Boeing 777, one of the best aircraft ever designed to date. I was returning from London, England on the morning of September 11, 2001. My passengers, crew and I diverted to Toronto, Canada. On the evening of September 13, 2001, we were the first aircraft allowed to return to the United States.
I retired from United Air Lines on January 1, 2002. My retirement flight was from London, England to Chicago, Illinois on December 24, 2001. Over my entire career I have logged over 17,000 hours. It has been a great career!
