    Captain McDermott served as a pilot in the United States Navy, flying P3 “Orions,” from 1964 to 1969. He continued his Naval Service as a pilot in the U.S. Naval Reserves until he retired in 1987 with the rank of Captain, USNR.
    He joined United Airlines in 1969 and flew many types of aircraft during his 32 year career. He retired as a Captain in 2001.
