Captain Cosgrave, during World War II was a part of the "Greatest Generation" in the Army Air Corps. He flew 50 missions in B-17's out of North Africa, and did a stint as General Dwight Eisenhower’s personal pilot. He requested to go back to his bomber squadron to finish his missions in order to sooner get back to his lovely bride of six months, Rose.
Richard "Dick" joined United Airlines shortly after his release from the Army and was soon involved in a long career with the Airline Pilot's Association, representing pilots. He held many positions including Co-Pilot Representative, Captain Representative, Pension Committee member, Negotiation Committee, member and its Chairman, to name a few. He was also very involved with the United/Capital Airlines merger and their integration, and was ultimately elected as United's Master Executive Council Chairman for a two-year term.
Dick retired from United Airlines at age 60, and then received an appointment to the National Mediation Board as a Mediator. He enjoyed this work for nearly ten years, then retired to travel, fish, golf, and enjoy his family full-time. He was always so proud of each one of them. His love and joy in their accomplishments, and their love and respect for him, knew no bounds.
Richard "Dick" Cosgrave is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rose, three children, Kathi, John, Rick, and their spouses, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Richard "Dick" Cosgrave touched many lives by his love of family and friends, and left this world a better place by his many accomplishments. That is all anyone can ask.
