    Captain Robert Burkholder flew 34 combat missions in World War II as a B-17 Flying Fortress co-pilot, one of which over Munich, July 12, 1944, resulted in a ditching in the North Sea and membership in the Royal Air Force "Goldfish Club." He was with the 457th Bomb Group, 750th Bomb Squadron.

    After completing a heavy bomber tour, he received fighter pilot training in the P-51 Mustang in England, and flew 47 combat missions with the 1st Scouting Force, 1st Air Division, 8 th Air Force.

    His campaigns included: Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (with Oak Leaf Cluster) and the Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters. He was discharged November 27, 1945 as a captain.
