    Robert Lee Burns served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1951 to May 1957. He was in pilot training class 54-I, single engine jet, at Foster Air Force Base, Texas. He was at instrument school for the F-94C Starfire transition in May 1954, and F-89D Scorpion transition in October 1954.

    From October 1954 to October 1956 he was at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska with the 66th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. In October 1956 he completed F-86H transition at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. He served with the West Virginia Air National Guard from 1958 to 1961 flying the F-86H.

    He was with Capital Airlines first and then with United Airlines from May 1957 to December 1994; he was Airline Transport Pilot Certified for multi-engine land for B-727, B-737, B-747, and DC-10. He had commercial privileges for single engine land, and held a flight engineer certificate turbojet powered and reciprocating engine powered aircraft.
