    Captain Mitchell was born on May 18, 1937 in Tunica, Mississippi, and grew up in
    Pascagoula, Mississippi. After graduating from Pascagoula High School in 1955, he earned an AS Degree from Perkinston Jr. College, and joined NAVCAD class 32-57 at the Naval Aviation Training Center in Pensacola, Florida. He was designated Naval Aviator and commissioned 2nd Lt USMCR on December 17, 1958. After serving as a Helicopter Pilot and Primary Flight Instructor in the Marine Corps, he became a test pilot for the Aero Physics Research Laboratory at Mississippi State University in September, 1962, and Joined United Airlines on October 28, 19637as aDC-6 Second Officer. Captain Mitchell commanded all of United's Boeing Jetliners from the B727 through the B767, retiring as B747-400 Captain on May1,1997.
