Captain Puryear started flying for United Airlines in February 1943. He flew United’s ATC Contract in the Pacific theater until the end of WWII.
After the war, he flew all of United Airlines’ Douglas aircraft – DC 3, 4, 5 and 8. He also flew the Convair 340. He ended a 38 ½ year career at United Airlines in 1981 when he became 60 years of age. Flying the B747 for 10 years.
Capt. Puryear was very active in EAA, Experimental Aircraft Association from 1966 on. He served on the Board of Directors from 1971-1994. He flew private aircraft until 2002.
