Capt. Fitzsimmons began his flying career in the U.S. Air Force. After training, he was a pilot in KC-97 tankers and B-29 bombers. After completing his military service, "Bob" was hired by Trans World Airlines as a First officer. The aircraft he flew for TWA included the Martin 404, Lockheed Constellation, Boeing 307 Stratoliner, Boeing 727, Boeing 707, and finally the 747, his favorite! Capt. Fitzsimmons, of Glendale, California, inspired his nephew to become a professional pilot.
