    Robert W. Gardner enlisted as an Aviation Cadet with the Air Corps of the Army of the United States February 1, 1942. He completed his training at Luke Field, Phoenix, Arizona, on September 28th, 1942. Capt. Gardner was assigned as a pilot of a P-38 fighter plane serving in the North African campaign from December, 1942, to September, 1943. Upon completion of 50 missions and more than 200 hours of flying time, he was returned to the states and served as chief test pilot at Daggett Army Air Base, California. With the demobilization of his unit at Daggett on September 22, 1945, he was transferred to San Bernandino, California, where he was discharged December 13, 1945.

    Capt. Gardner's decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Medal with seven oak clusters and American Defense theater with two bronze stars.
