    Born in Scunthorpe, England of Scottish parents. Emigrated from Scotland in 1926. Hired by United Air Lines in 1940 as a student pilot. Promoted to Captain-UAL in 1942. Received a BA Degree in Chemistry from Youngstown College (now Youngstown University) in 1942.
    As a representative of ALPA (1952-54) was instrumental in creating insurance programs for ALPA pilots plus upgrading and modifying the United Air Lines Retirement Plan for Pilots. Chairman of ALPA's Insurance Committee reporting to the 1952 -54 ALPA Conventions which unanimously opposed the mandatory retirement of airline pilots,
    Elected as National Treasurer of the Airline Pilots Association 1960. Awarded "CREWMAN OF THE YEAR -1978" by United Air Lines President Richard Ferris after an uneventful landing at Honolulu following a failure of three engines to respond to throttle.
    After retirement in 1978, elected President of the Retired United Pilots Association (RUPA). During this period actively opposed mandatory retirement of airline pilots at age 60 and instigated legal action allowing pilots to continue their careers as Second Officers.

    Participated as a consultant in a study to improve Air Traffic Control, sponsored by NASA at Moffet Air Force Base, CA 1992-97.
