    Captain Ed Griffith first flew solo in 1950 at Graham Field, Butler, PA in a Piper Cub J-3. He entered the aviation cadet program through Pennsylvania Air National Guard in June 1953, graduating from Williams Air Force Base (AFB), AZ in October 1954. He flew the F-84G (Saber) at Luke AFB, AZ. He returned to Pittsburgh in March of 1955 and flew F-84F until moving to NJ in 1965.

    Griffith was hired on as co-pilot for Capital Airlines in February 1956, and flew the Douglas DC-3, DC-4 and the Vickers Viscount. When Capital was taken over by United Airlines in 1961, moved to New Jersey when Pittsburgh was closed as a crew base.

    He checked out with United as captain in January 1967 on the Viscount and Douglas DC-6. He moved up to the Boeing 727, and was moved to Cleveland, OH in 1978. He was the first council chairman for the Air Line Pilots Association at Cleveland. He spent 25 years representing pilots. He flew the Douglas DC-10 at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport until he retired from United Air Lines.

    He was married to Barbara Jarvis in 1954, the have five sons and 14 grandchildren.
