    Born in San Francisco in 1942, Thomas Allan Remus dedicated his career to the service of aviation in the United States.

    Tom attended Stanford University (Civil Engineering) on an NROTC scholarship, graduating in 1964. After college, Tom served on active duty in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1970 where, among other assignments, he flew the F-4B Phantom II in combat during the Vietnam War (a Phantom II is on display in this facility). Tom served the next two decades in the Navy Reserve and retired as Captain in 1991.

    Tom had a fulfilling civilian career in support of civil aviation highlighted by his 22 years at the Port of Oakland where he was Senior Civil Engineer. He also held positions at Kennedy/Jenks, Parsons Brinckerhoff, HNTB and Carter & Burgess.

    Throughout his life, Tom held a deep interest in aviation history and technology. Tom was passionate about even the tiniest local aviation museum and greatly respected the Smithsonian’s efforts to preserve this history of flight.
