Flying a P-38 aircraft in the Solomon Islands during World War II, Captain Chandler shot down five Japanese Zero fighters while flying with the 339th Fighter Squadron of the 347th Fighter Group of the 13th Air Force.
Captain Chandler was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters.
