Captain Burg served in the China Burma India Theater during World War II from November 1942 until March 1945. He organized and maintained the Aerial Photographic Section for the 7th Bomb Group of the 10th Air Force. He trained B-24 Liberator waist gunners to perform reconnaissance photography that photo interpreters needed to determine the success or failure of the bombing mission.

He took the first sharply focused night bombing photographs by using flash bombs timed to explode immediately after the target was hit, coordinated with the opening and closing of the camera lens. In 1944 Captain Burg was detached to the 14th Air Force in China to help their aerial photographic section.

Although not a flight officer, he flew 12 combat missions totaling over 112 combat hours and was awarded the Air Medal. in 1945 when he was rotated home, Colonel Harvey T. Alness, the 7th Bomb Group commander wrote: "The results of your work will always remain a criteria and an example to new men entering the 7th Bomb Group."
