    Captain Sam L. Qualls started his flying career in the 1960 ROTC Flight Class, at the University of Tennessee, where he trained in a Cessna 150 airplane.
    In March 1961, he was commissioned a Second Lt. in the U.S. Army. At Ft. Eustis, VA, he attended the two month Transportation Officer Orientation Course.
    He attended Flight School at Camp Wolters, Texas for four months, flying OH-23 helicopters; and a Ft. Rucker, Alabama, for five months, flying CH-21 helicopters.
    From August 1962 to July 1963, he was in the 33rd Transportation Company flying CH-21 helicopters in Vietnam.
    At Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, from August 1963 until March 1965, he flew high-ranking General officers from the Pentagon around the Washington DC area, in VH-21 and VH-34 helicopters, while in the 3rd Transportation Company. During this period, as an Instructor Pilot, he trained a General officer in an OH-13; and his assignments included flying President Eisenhower and Attorney General Robert Kennedy.
