    A Seattle native, he became a Naval Aviator in June 1963. He flew helicopters for 10 years, rescuing 12 people and setting an individual pilot squadron record for HC-2. He also spent 10 years flying P-3 Antisubmarine Warfare turboprop aircraft. Navy retirement in 1984, with greater than 4000 flight hours, was followed by over 15 years as a Lockheed Martin engineer modernizing the FAA air traffic control system.
