    Commander Ausbrooks enlisted in the Navy in 1946, and served in enlisted and commissioned status until retiring in 1976. As a Naval Aviator, he qualified in heavier-than-air and lighter-than-air craft, single, twin and four engine aircraft, and he qualified on carriers. He demonstrated that "blimps" could be landed, refueled and reprovisioned from underway aircraft carriers. He qualified as officer of the deck (OD) and command duty officer (CDO) underway on carriers. He also qualified as "gun boss" and executive officer on anti-submarine warfare support (CVS) type carriers and held the nuclear weapons subspecialty. He served during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Matsu and Quemoy Islands dispute, and Vietnam. He held bachelors and masters of art degrees, a masters in law and diplomacy, and graduated from the US Navy Post Graduate School. In retirement he was elected mayor of Hendersonville, TN from 1986 to 1988.
