CDR Lawrence "Tex" Curran's aviation career began in 1962 when he joined the US Navy. Tex attended Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) and Basic Navigation School in Pensacola, Florida. He earned his Naval Flight Officer wings in Corpus Christi, Texas in the summer of 1963. After earning his "wings", Tex completed Justice School. During the next 22 years, Tex was actively involved in Naval aviation.
1963-1965 Stationed in Guam, as the legal officer for his squadron, Tex flew the EC-121 Super Constellation (aka "Super Connie" or "Willy Victor") with the "Typhoon Trackers" squadron VW-1.
While in Guam, during the Vietnam War, Tex flew with VW-1 into Da Nang.
1965-1968 In Kingsville, Texas, Tex was a Maintenance Officer and taught Weapons and Leadership as a Ground School instructor.
1970-1971 Stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas, he was a Navigation School instructor.
1972-1975 At Moffett Field in California, as the Mission Commander on the P-3C Orion, Tex conducted anti-submarine warfare with squadron VP-48. He deployed to Guam, Vietnam, and Adak, Alaska.
Tex continued his Naval career by earning a Master's degree in Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He was the Commanding Officer of the Naval Station in Barbados. Tex was stationed in Washington, DC at the Pentagon and ended his career in the US Navy at the Center for Naval Analysis. He retired in July 1985.
Tex's lifelong love for aviation continued after retirement when he earned a private pilot's license. He became a member of the Quantico Flying Club in the early 1990's and flew Cessna 172's. Tex's interest in aviation continues anytime he is on a commercial flight - he listens to the pilots' communication rather than watching movies or listening to music!
