Chuck Salt grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, building model airplanes and spending time at the airport. During World War II he joined the Civil Air Patrol and took a few flying lessons in a Piper Cub. While he wanted to join the Army Air Corps, he was still too young when the War ended. He was drafted into the Army and served one year in Korea. A few years after his return from Korea and discharge from the Army, Chuck joined Eastern Airlines(EAL) in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1966 he was transferred to Miami, Florida where he achieved his dream of becoming a private pilot in 1968. He rebuilt a Piper Tri-Pacer in his garage. He later purchased a 1956 Cessna 172 which he flew to Oshkosh twice.
Retiring from EAL in July 1987, he spent many retirement hours volunteering at Week's Air Museum in Miami, assisting in their restoration projects. His last project was helping to rebuild their TP-40. He loved being around the old Warbirds and always enjoyed learning about airplanes. Chuck was an active member of EAA Chapter #37 and for many years served as their Treasurer. Chuck was in the process of rebuilding his Cessna 172 and a Navion purchased after Hurricane Andrew damaged it. His membership in the Panair Flying Club provided him with planes to fly while his own was down.
He and his wife [Phyllis Schauweker] raised three sons, two have their pilot's licenses and two are Eagle Scouts.
Chuck lost his battle with Cancer on May 5, 1998.
