My dear brother Chris, who I honor on his birthday with this profile, has always been a bit of a science geek. As a toddler, I’m convinced he was already an expert in reverse engineering. In fact, when I decided this would be his present, it turns out I readily had the following photo scenarios to choose from, without even asking our parents for pictures, because there are just so, so many floating around the Interwebs: him with his various science fair projects; him playing with model rockets with my Dad; him dissecting things (under supervision); his self-built computer; him holding various bits of electronic gear and parts; him and his Boy Scout Troop visiting the F-18s on a naval base in Florida; in short, him just looking like a huge nerd. But when the digital dust settled, I chose this photo of him dutifully watering some marigolds whilst mid-science-project because the expression on his face is one that he often has: a unique mix of grim determination, tinged with a bit of disappointment that he is stuck doing a project with flowers that my mom okayed instead of the jet pack masterpiece he had probably been envisioning beforehand. No matter. He won the big ribbon that year, and he continues to impress us with his wit, confidence and creative approaches to problem solving. Happy birthday, dork! We all love you dearly. Hugs and a kiss from your favorite and only biological sister (so far as we know).
