On April 7, 1945 the 29th Bomb Group led 1,300 B-24s and B-17s of the Eighth Air Force to targets in Germany. Flying as Copilot of the Sessoms crew leading the 565th Squadron, Clark Robinson took over command when Luftwaffe ME-262s, ME-109s and FW-190s attacked. In one of the rare instances where Germans used “suicide fighter” techniques they rammed and knocked down the Group’s Leader, Colonel John Herboth and his Deputy Leader, Major J.F. Tolleson. In the ensuring raid both the Primary target, Duneberg and the Secondary target, Neumunster were destroyed.
Colonel Arnold and Colonel Jimmy Stewart recommended Sessoms, Robinson and Bombardier, George DeGraff for the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Two weeks earlier Robinson and his crew had been shot down on a low-level re-supply mission code named “Vasity Haul” at Wesel, Germany.
