Served in United States Merchant Marine as Radio Officer aboard U.S. merchant ships carrying bombs, ammunition and war supplies to U.S. 8th Air Force in Britain, U.S. 5th Army in Italy and U.S. Army in the Philippine Islands. Was aboard ship preparing for the invasion of Japan when WWII was terminated by the dropping of the atomic bomb.

Attended Florida State University obtaining a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in physics.
December 1950 to July 1977
Commissioned as Ensign in U.S. Naval Reserve. Served aboard various ships of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and shore stations. Participated in the initial deployment of an airborne mine countermeasures unit; participated in a cold weather mine countermeasures exercise involving both air and surface units. Received commendation from Commander, Mine Warfare Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Served as Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Composite Company 6-55, Panama City, Florida, FY 1967. Retired in 1977 with rank of Commander, U.S. Naval Reserve.
