For distinguished and meritorious performance of duty while participating in aerial flight against the enemy in operations against the Ploesti Oil Refineries of Romania on 1 August 1943* In this mission of extraordinary importance and danger, these officers and men crew members of the 566th Bombardment Squadron, 389th Bombardment Group (H), performed their duties with such brilliance and skill as to bring lasting honor to their organization. Undaunted by the tremendous length of the mission, by the assaults of hostile fighter aircraft, or by the concentrated and deadly gunfire of some of the heaviest anti-aircraft installation in Europe, they fought their way to the target, and bombed and strafed it with such highly destructive effect that it was largely destroyed. Their part in this mission which was one of the most daring and difficult in aviation history was such as to bring high honor, not only to themselves and their organization, but to the United States Army Air Force.
