    Chief Gantzler enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in June 1962. He was sent to Indiana University to study Russian language and then to Wakannai AS, Wakannai Japan for his first operational assignment. Chief Gantzler spent just under 15 months in Japan then went back to language school at Syracuse University. His next assignment was with the 6919th Security Squadron at Rheinmain AB in Germany. After just over two years in Germany, Chief Gantzler was part of a group asked to volunteer to open a new unit in Athens, Greece. After two and a half years in Greece, Chief Gantzler went to Offutt AFB, NE then was selected by the AF for a special assignment. He went to the Presidio of Monterey for 12 weeks of Polish language training. He got a 3/3 on the language proficiency test and was assigned to the Defense Attache Office at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw, Poland. After two years in Warsaw, Chief Gantzler was reassigned to San Antonio, TX where he spent 4 years on a traveling IG team. He left San Antonio in January 1980 and returned to Athens, Greece. When he made Chief, he was reassigned to a new Wing being established in Wiesbaden, Germany. He served two years in Germany then was reassigned to HQ Air Force Intelligence Service as Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, United States Air Force. Chief Gantzler retired from the Air Force on February 1, 1985.
