After thirty years service, Col. Swan retired from the Air Force in 1973 as the Commander of the Air Force Special Weapons Center , Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. He was a Command Pilot.
He received a PhD in Physiology and Biophysics in 1960 from the University of North Carolina.
He was the Deputy for Research and Development at Headquarters, Aerospace Medical Division, Brooks AFB, Texas from 1965 to 1968.
He belonged to many scientific organizations and participated in many research projects for the Air Force.
After his military career, he was active in civilian organizations until his death in March 2003.
