    Col Avery J. Ladd, USAF (Ret) started flying in 1929, joined the Royal Canadian Air force in 1939 as check pilot on lend lease aircraft going to England. Returned to the US Army Air Corps in May 1942, flew combat in B-29 in India and China 1944-1945.

    Flew C-124 aircraft in support of B-29 in Korean War.

    Flew KC-97 at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH with Col Albert Boyd, Chief of Air Force Flight Test.

    Flew XC-124 at Douglas Aircraft, Long Beach, CA in 1949. Accepted first C-124 for Air Force in June 1950.

    Retired 31 Oct 1961 with pilot time of 24,272 hours, the most in the USAF at that time.

    Inducted into the State of Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame in 1998.
