    Col. Malone served on active duty from 15 March 1941 to 1 October 1969. His service spanned World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. A fighter pilot with the rating of Command Pilot, he flew 27 different aircraft, most notably the P-38.P-40, P-51, B-25, F-80, F-84F, F-84G, F-86 F, RF-101, F105, and RF-4C. He accumulated more than 5,700 flying hours, including more than 300 combat hours in World War II and the Korean War- mostly on interdiction and ground-support missions.
    Col. Malone earned his pilot's wings and officer's commission on 1 November 1941. He served as a flight instructor and in 1944 had combat fighter training at Page Field in Ft. Meyers, Florida in the P-40 and the P-51. He flew the P-51 in the 348th Fighter-Bomber Group. When the 348th was disbanded he was transferred to the 475th Fighter Group in Kimpo Air Base near Seoul, Korea. He commanded a squadron in the 475th until he was reassigned as the commander of a tactical control squadron of the 502nd Tactical Control Group and eventually became the Deputy Commander.
    In 1950, he was assigned to the 8th Fighter Group operating out of Pyongyang and then Japan during the Korean War. He finished the Korean War as a fighter squadron commander in the 35th Fighter Group. His next assignment was as a Lt. Col. at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a staff officer at Air Defense Command HQ at Colorado Springs, Co. After Air Command and Staff School, he assumed command of an F-86F squadron. He went to Turkey as Chief of the U.S. Fighter Training Division of the Military Assistance Delegation training Turkish air force units equipped with F-86G and F-86F aircraft.
    In 1957, he was promoted to Colonel at age of 38. He held the following
    positions:
    Vice Commander 49th Tactical Fighter Wing
    Commander of the 66th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing
    Commander of the 75th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing
    Col. Malone awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2), Distinguished Flying Cross(2), Air Medal (5), Air Force Commendation Medal and numerous campaign and battle stars.
