Col. Schmitz enlisted in the service in April 1942 and had completed training to be a pilot and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant by May 1943. He served in the Pacific as a pilot and various staff positions. He left the service in December 1946 and returned to active duty in March 1947.
He has served in New Guinea, Philippines, Japan, and Vietnam as well as stateside positions at Turner AFB, GA, and Forbes AFB in Kansas and the Pentagon.
