    Born March 23, 1925 in Hollis, New York, Frederick Griswold enlisted as an Aviation Cadet in the Army Air Force in 1943. He completed Basic Pilot training in 1944 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt USAAF. He entered WWII in the Pacific Theater, flying the B-24, C-46, and C-47. Lt Griswold was demobilized in 1946 as a Reserve Officer.
    He was ordered back to active duty in the USAF in 1952 and sent for training as an Aircraft Controller, serving in Korea during the Korean War in that capacity.
    Following that 1st Lt. Griswold was assigned to Caswell AF station in Limestone, Maine with the Air Defense Command as an Intercept Controller. His love for flying kept him in the air flying regularly regardless of his duty assignments. He was assigned tot eh USA-RAF Exchange program in 1958. This entailed a move to England, where he was stationed at RAF Neatishead for two years as an Exchange Officer.
    Capt Griswold returned to Staff and Command College at Maxwell AFB. After graduation he was assigned to a flying position in MATS. He continued through a series of assignments, rising in command. During the Vietnam War he served as a Squadron Commander at Udorn RTAFB, Thailand and Clark AB, Philippines. From Clark AB Col Griswold commanded the 604 Military Aircraft Support Sq, directly supporting Operation Babylift and Operation Homecoming – returning POWs from Hanoi to Clark. During this period he was awarded Special Recognition for Humanitarian Efforts by the American Legion. After returning to the US he continued through a series of commands and retired in 1979.
    During his career Col Griswold flew many types and sized of aircraft. He was constant in his love for flying. He was designated a Pilot, Senior Pilot, Command Pilot and Instructor Pilot. The aircraft he flew included the PT-17, BT-13, AT-10, B-24, C-46, C-47, Meteor 8, Anson, Chipmunk, C-124, C-141, and in retirement he continues in a Mooney M20E.
