    Hayes Bryan soloed in an airplane at age 16, was licensed at 17, and was a commercial pilot and flight instructor at 21. He attended U.S. Air Force pilot training and was the "most distinguished graduate" of class 60-C. He served as a flight instructor on the T-33, T-37 and T-38 aircraft.

    Bryan flew 192 combat missions in Vietnam in the F-4C Phantom while assigned to Cam Ranh Bay, Republic of Vietnam. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and numerous Air Medals.

    From 1969 to 1970 he was on the Aerospace Research Pilot School staff. From 1970 to 1979 he was on the U.S. Air Force Academy faculty, and in 1976 he received a doctor of philosophy degree in aerospace engineering. He served as director of physics in the Air Force Office of Scientific Research from 1979 to 1983.

    Following retirement as a colonel, he was a contractor and participated in the space program from 1983 to 1993.

    From 1993 to present he has been an amphibian pilot.
