    Born October 15, 1920, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Served in the Army Air Corps during World War II receiving a commission as Second Lieutenant on July 2, 1942.
    From January to July 1943 completed 25 missions flying as a Bombardier on B-17 Flying Fortresses in the Eighth Air Force. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. On April 17, 1943, Lieutenant Hickey earned the rare distinction for an officer by gaining credit for downing two Focke Wulf 190 fighter planes on the same mission over Bremen, Germany.
    Relieved from active duty as a Captain in December 1945, he entered the College of Law, University of Kentucky in 1946 and was graduated in 1948, receiving the L.L.B. law degree.
    In December 1948, he received a Regular Air Force Commission and returned to active duty for the next twenty-four years in the Air Force Judge Advocate General's Department. His varied military assignments included those of Staff Judge Advocate at Air Force bases, Assistant Staff Judge Advocate in the Headquarters Far East Air Forces, Tokyo, Japan, 1952-54, Assistant Staff Judge Advocate Headquarters Air Defense Command, Colorado Springs, Colorado 1954-59. Staff Judge Advocate Joint United States Military Group, Madrid, Spain 1960-63, and Chairman Air Force Board of Review, Office of The Judge Advocate General, 1966-68. In September 1970 he retired as Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in the grade of Colonel.
    From 1971-73, John Hickey was a Director of Legal and Judicial Administration Headquarters — The Council For State Governments.
    In 1973, he became the first Director of Continuing Legal Education, College of Law-University of Kentucky. He organized and administered the first state-wide program of post-graduate legal education for lawyers in Kentucky. He retired from that position in 1986.
    Personal Data: Married to the former Elizabeth J. Pattavina - has three grown children and four grandchildren. Resides at 3340 Nantucket Road, Lexington, Kentucky.

    Member of Bars of Colorado and Kentucky.

    Maintains memberships in the American Bar Association, Kentucky Bar Association and the Fayette County Bar Association.
