    1923-2000—Born Roxborough, PA, July 15, 1923. Entered US Army Air Corps March 1943; trained at Santa Ana, CA for pre-flight, Ryan Field for primary, Mariana for basic, and Williams Field for advanced. Graduated flying school in class 44-A, January 1944. P-38 training was at Ontario, CA, January-May 1944. Assigned to the 401 Fighter Squadron, 370 Fighter Group, 9 Air Force at Andover, England. Flew 79 missions (60 in P-38 and 19 in P-51). Airplane: Pennsy Lady. One FW-190 destroyed.

    Attended Helicopter Pilot School San Marcos, TX, January-April 1947. Then joined Air Rescue Service with Det. 10, Hill Field, UT, June 1947. Transferred to 9th Air Rescue Squadron (ARS) at Lowry AB, CO, December 1947 to be first helicopter pilot in Rocky Mt. area. Sent to Flight A, 7th ARS at Wiesbaden, Germany, January 1950 and was first helicopter pilot in Germany.

    Returned to United States in April 1953, assigned in Washington, DC, at ARS Hq as one of three chief helicopter pilots. Went to Orlando, FL, with ARS Hq. when it moved there in 1954; remained until January 1956 when assigned to Hq Military Air Transport Service (MATS) as helicopter maintenance officer in Directorate of Maintenance.

    Flew one combat mission during Korean War and 26 missions in Vietnam War while assigned in Nha Trang and Saigon as Director of Maintenance, 7th Air Force. Total of 6502 military flying hours in 36 different aircraft. Retired as Colonel August 1974.

    Spent three years as Operations Director, Iran Aircraft Industry, Tehran, with Northrop Worldwide, and 13 years with Lockheed/Burbank L-1011 Commercial Support/Contracts.

    Member Air Force Association, Daedalians, The Retired Officers Association (TROA), Air Rescue Association, and past-president, P-38 National Association, past Chairman, Executive Committee, and Editor (from its inception in 1987) of "Lightning Strikes," the P-38 newsletter.

    Former Director/Public Relations, Air Rescue Association (October 1993-October 1996).

    Awards: 2 Legion of Merit, Air Medal w/13 clusters, 2 Air Force Commendation Medals.

    Married for 48 years to the former Nancy Coleman; seven children and 21 grandchildren.
