    Col. Benham enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in July, 1942 after graduation from High School. He was called to active duty in January, 1943. Entered pilot training and graduated 5 Dec 1943 as a pilot and commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Air Corps. Sent immediately to the Panama Canal Zone as a fighter pilot, flying P-40s and P-39s on the Galapagos Islands and several other Fighter Squadrons within the Canal Zone. During the assignment, he flew P-38 and P-47 fighter aircraft. Col. Benham’s service included assignments in the Air Defense Cmd; Korea & Vietnam in those conflicts; assignments also included F89s in Alaska Air Cmd, F4 in the 81st F.S. in Europe, and Wing Staff positions in Europe and the Tactical Air Command. He retired in 1972.
