    Born August 24, 1925, in Newark, NJ. Began his military career as a U.S. Army Air Corp Cadet in 1943; flew B17, B24, B29 as Navigator and Radar Observer.

    Received Mechanical Engineering degree from Newark College of Engineering in 1950.

    Completed pilot training in 1951, jet training in 1952. Graduated Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in 1961.

    Served tours at McGuire AFB, NJ; Saipan; Chitose, Japan; WPAFB, Ohio; Andrews AFB, MD; Bolling AFB, DC; Bien Hoa Air Base, Vietnam. Other aircraft flown: T33, F84, F94, F86D, A1E. Decorated pilot whose awards include Silver Star, DFC, Air Medal, Purple Heart.

    Col. Mauterer was forced to eject from his A1E over the Khammouan Province of Laos during a flight on February 15, 1966, after his aircraft was hit by ground fire. Listed as Missing in Action until 1977. He remains unaccounted for.

    A dedicated military and civilian pilot, he shared his passion for flight with his family and will always be remembered as a distinguished Air Force officer and pilot; loving and nurturing husband, father, son, brother and uncle; friend to many and gifted teacher of aviation to American and international military students.
