    Graduated with distinction from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Designated a Naval Flight Officer in September, 1972. Served 3 years as an A-6 Bombardier/Navigator in the 1st and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wings. Designated a Naval Aviator in September, 1976, receiving the Daughter's of the American Revolution Award as the top Marine to complete flight training in that year. Served 3 years as an A-6 Pilot in the 1st and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wings. Graduated with distinction from U. S. Naval Test Pilot School in December, 1980, with Class 80. Served 4 1/2 years as a test pilot at Patuxent River. Selected as a NASA Astronaut in 1985. Completed four Space Shuttle missions serving as the Pilot on STS-41 and STS-53, and as the Commander on STS-65 and STS-88, the first Space Station Assembly mission. Served as NASA's Chief Astronaut for 3 years from 1994 to 1997. He has accumulated over 6,000 hours in 34 different types of aircraft.
