    Col. Tom Lawell spent 30 years (1960 – 90) in the United States Air Force. He entered the AF through the ROTC program at Indiana University. He flew heavy transports, i.e., C-124s, C-141s and C-5s. He served two tours of duty in the Pentagon and was the Wing Vice Commander at Charleston AFB and the Wing Commander at McGuire AFB. He completed all three AF professional schools, i.e., SOS, ACSC, and AWC. He retired out of McClellan AFB where he was the Air Forces first Environmental Manager at base level. He ended his AF flying career with over 6,000 flying hours on March 1, 1990.
