In World War II started his military career as a Sgt. Pilot in the RAF flying Spitfires. At the advent of the U. S. Forces he transferred to the USAC. Serving with the 31st Fighter Group in England, Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He became a Squadron Commander and flew some 240 operational missions. He was awarded the Silver Star, the DFC and a large number of Air Medals. He finished his active career as Squadron and Deputy Group Commander at Fighter Gunnery School at Nellis AFB.
