    Honored by:
    Ms. Diana Blummanter

William Blum left Notre Dame University where he was attending college in 1940 to join the US Army Air Corps. He was rejected due to high blood pressure. He went home, changed his diet, took long walks, and took flying lessons on his own. In 1941 he was accepted into the Air Force.

He flew out of England with the 712th Squadron which was part of the Eighth Air Force. On his 28th mission, flying in the position of Command Pilot on Sep 9, 1944 in a B-24, he was shot down over Germany where he spent the remainder of the war as a POW. He died in 1972.
