    Colonel Roberds entered the United States Air Force in December 1956 following his graduation from the University of Kansas with a bachelors degree in physics. His initial assignment was as a pilot candidate, and he subsequently accrued 4,000 hours of flying time in such aircraft as the T-33, T-38, F-86, F-102 and the O-2A. In all, he piloted over ten different Air Force aircraft during his career. In 1971, Colonel Roberds served a year tour in Viet Nam as the commander of a forward air controller unit. Flying the O-2A, he acquired 183 combat missions over Viet Nam and Cambodia. He was subsequently awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and eight Air Medals for that action in Southeast Asia.
